Gilded Age Grandeur. Modern-Day Masterpiece.

Spanning more than 4, 300 square feet within the legendary Apthorp, Residence 2C is one of them-a fully renovated four-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bathroom home where Gilded Age grandeur meets a distinctly modern point of view.

The arrival is cinematic. An expansive entrance gallery introduces ceilings soaring beyond 10.5 feet, marble mosaic floors, stately columns and intricate original moldings-a quiet reminder of the craftsmanship and scale that have defined The Apthorp for more than a century.

From there, the residence unfolds through a series of beautifully proportioned rooms connected by oak herringbone floors and framed by oversized windows. Original architectural details and elegant fireplace mantels lend a sense of history without formality, while north and south exposures bring shifting natural light throughout the day. From the windows, flowering trees, landscaped gardens and fountains of The Apthorp’s celebrated courtyard create an almost European tableau-serene, private and wonderfully removed from the city just beyond its gates.

The romance of the architecture is balanced by the comforts of contemporary living. Radiant floor heating, generous soaking tubs, updated heating and cooling systems and integrated sound throughout have been thoughtfully incorporated without compromising the residence’s original character.

And then there is The Apthorp itself.

Commissioned by William Waldorf Astor in 1908, the landmark remains one of Manhattan’s great architectural statements. Its monumental Italian Renaissance Revival facade and iconic wrought-iron gates reveal a private landscaped courtyard at its center-an extraordinary oasis that has made arriving home here one of the Upper West Side’s most recognizable rituals.

Behind the historic architecture is a decidedly modern lifestyle. Residents enjoy 6, 500 square feet of private amenities, including a spa, fitness center, yoga studio, treatment rooms, steam room, sauna, children’s playroom and an elegant entertaining suite with bar, catering kitchen, billiards and media room. Four attended residential lobbies, hand-delivered mail, an on-site building manager and internal-access parking complete the experience.

With Riverside Park and Central Park nearby, along with the American Museum of Natural History and the restaurants, culture and energy that define the Upper West Side, Residence 2C offers something increasingly elusive in Manhattan: remarkable scale, architectural beauty and a genuine sense of place.
