Home to Brooklyn’s bustling Chinatown, as well as the exciting new Industry City waterfront development, and the beautiful hilltop park bearing its name with sweeping views of the FiDi skyline and New York Harbor, Greenwood and Sunset Park are diverse Brooklyn neighborhoods in transition.
The portion of the neighborhoods west of 4th Avenue, isolated by the hulking elevated Gowanus Expressway, has been neglected for decades, with abandoned warehouses that are now occupied by Industry City – a 35-acre warehouse complex filled with artists, tech companies, food purveyors and boutique manufacturing and office tenants. It is also home to the Brooklyn Nets’ practice facility and the Hospital for Special Surgery Training Center. With developers pushing for a rezoning of the area to permit housing development and other uses, this part of Greenwood/Sunset Park is sure to look a lot different in ten years.
East of 5th Avenue, Sunset Park looks largely as it has for the past several decades, with blocks of brick and wood rowhouses, as well as limestones and brownstones, tenements and some large apartment buildings. Here, you will find commercial avenues lined with the businesses of the neighborhood’s Mexican, Dominican and Chinese residents, and quiet residential streets.
